What Does a Fuel Injection Pump Do?
The fuel injection pump is the heart of a diesel fuel system. It pressurizes and meters the fuel and delivers it to each injector at the correct moment in the engine cycle. Pressure, timing and fuel quantity decide how much power the engine makes, how cleanly it burns and how much fuel it uses.
Signs the Fuel Pump Needs Replacing
- Hard starting: long cranking, or an engine that starts and then dies, because the pump cannot build enough pressure.
- Loss of power: weak pull under load, sluggish acceleration or poor performance on slopes.
- Exhaust smoke: black smoke from over-fueling, white smoke from unburned fuel or wrong timing, and blue smoke from oil burning.
- Rough idle or surging: unstable idle speed or hesitation can point to a worn pump or air in the fuel.
- Higher fuel consumption or leaks: visible drips, a fuel smell or a clear drop in fuel economy.
These symptoms overlap with clogged filters, air in the fuel lines and injector faults, so check the filters and fuel supply first and confirm the pump is the cause.
How to Order and Install the 319-0677 Hydraulic Fuel Injection Pump
- Confirm your engine model, machine model and the part number on your existing pump before ordering.
- Replace the fuel filters and use clean fuel, because contamination is a common cause of early pump wear.
- Replace worn seals and gaskets and check the fuel lines and fittings for cracks or leaks.
- Bleed the air out of the fuel system after installation using the priming pump or bleed screws; extended cranking is not a substitute for proper bleeding.
- Check and set the injection pump timing according to the engine service manual after installation.
- Start the engine and check for fuel leaks and stable idle before returning the machine to work.
